The Sallie Gardner Effect: Way Before Spider-Man

Issue # 6
Darkman (1990) Review
by ManicallyDepressed

20 years ago, a comic book enthusiast wanted to make a film adaptation of either The Shadow or Batman. They denied him the rights to both comic book characters, so Sam Raimi told himself, “Screw them. I’ll create my own.”

Sam Raimi’s Darkman is not a movie I would recommend to all, but it is a great movie with respect to its genre. It brings something fresh to the superhero film genre at that time. It has a darker plot compared to the Superman films, Ghostbusters films or even the then newly released Batman. Although not adapted from a comic book, Raimi’s touch creates the perfect illusion that Darkman is directly ripped from a comic book. The storytelling, sound, imagery, and humor successfully deliver that comic book experience. Darkman, as a character, is both engaging and significant because of the character’s antihero, and at the same time, moral driven persona. The overall character development is what makes the viewers to want to see more (And it did spawn two crappy sequels).

Although flawed (especially with plot holes. Don’t ask me why he has the document in his laboratory or where he got the Bruce Campbell mask at the end), it is one of those movies that may not be included in your top list, but will certainly be remembered.
