The Sallie Gardner Effect: The Not-So-Great Showdown

Issue # 7
Righteous Kill (2008) Review
by ManicallyDepressed

Robert De Niro. Al Pacino. In a crime thriller film. Written by the same guy from Inside Man (2006). What could have possibly gone wrong?

Bobby and Al were great, as always. With movies like Heat and Godfather, Part II, giving them the roles for a crime thriller is like passing the ball to Michael Jordan for the last shot. The main problem of this movie is the story. I’ve watched enough thrillers to tell you that this film has nothing exceptional. The entire story is built upon a single trick, its ending, which you might have already predicted halfway through the film. The ending wasn’t actually formulaic, but the rest of the film was so repetitive that it felt like it wanted to be predictable. Another thing I was disappointed about was that I was expecting this film to be one of those cat-and-mouse-chase films. Instead what I got is a mediocre buddy cop film. Bobby and Al telling jokes referring to old TV shows reminded of the Psych duo of Shawn Spencer and Burton Guster but 20 years older and not funny.

Compared to the other De Niro-Pacino movies, this movie has these two actors actually working together for almost throughout the film. This film is like a lifelong dream for any movie lover. Sadly, it was just a huge disappointment and a great waste of talent.

If you’ve been reading our past articles, you’ll know that the title for this review is a reference to The Great Showdown, Starman’s movie review on Heat.
