The Sallie Gardner Effect: Terminated

Issue # 8
Terminator Salvation (2009) Review

Unless you’re living under a rock, then you’ll know James Cameron’s Avatar is now in theaters. So far, it is doing financially and critically good. Unfortunately, I haven’t watched it yet, so instead I’ll be reviewing the fourth movie from a franchise started by James Cameron, Terminator Salvation.

I am a very huge fan of the Terminator movies, so it’s a shame that it took me this long to watch this one. Probably, I avoided watching this movie, because it was widely panned by critics. Now, it’s my turn.

Terminator Salvation is very different from the three other Terminator movies because it doesn’t include any time travel elements in its plot. It takes us to the post-apocalyptic part of John Connor’s life. And this movie is all post-apocalyptic goodness. The designs for the sceneries and the machines are praiseworthy. The world in Termination Salvation is exactly how I imagined it to be. Action scenes, not to mention the explosions, would satisfy any action movie junkie. Sadly, that’s all there is to it. My main problem with this movie is that it focuses too much on the half-human half-machine character of Sam Worthington. The character completely overshadows John Connor. The main focus of first three movies is saving John Connor. Now that John Connor doesn’t need saving, I wanted to see him act as the “Chosen One”. I expected the movie to tell us the story on how the machines came to fear John Connor so much to the point that they wanted him dead before he was even born. I can’t believe he isn’t the head of the entire Resistance yet in the movie. The plot was insignificant. It didn’t add any progress to the entire saga. The ending makes the plot even more insignificant. The movie even points out how insignificant the plot is by stating near the end “Skynet's global network remains strong.” The original ending was to have John killed, and Marcus, the half-human half-machine will be “wearing” John’s skin to continue the Resistance. This was leaked to the Internet so they changed it. This leaked ending was way better.

The good thing about Terminator Salvation is that it didn’t destroy the saga. There wouldn’t be any problem for creating another Terminator movie. Hopefully, next time, James Cameron will be taking over again.
