Issue # 9

by ManicallyDepressed

2009 is almost over and what a year it was! From the highly disappointing Transformers sequel to the sleeper hit, The Hangover, this year had its fair share of both good and bad movies. For this issue, I reviewed a movie I considered the best for this year.

Avatar (2009) Review

James Cameron has done it again. Avatar is a great visual experience. James Cameron successfully created a new world that one will learn to love within an hour or less. The world (moon, technically) of Pandora can be placed next to where Peter Jackson’s Middle-Earth and George Lucas’s Galaxy Far, Far Away belong. The Na’vi is very original as an alien race, at the same time very human-like, which effectively allowed connection to the general audience. Plot complexity isn’t a strong point of the movie. Though the plot is simple and at times, even predictable, it is far from boring. The first hour of the movie introduces you to the world of Pandora and the Na’vi, while the rest of the movie takes you to an emotional thrill ride. Lastly, one cannot deny the moral and political issues contained in the movie. Ironically, the alien environment and experience emulates human history. As an epic movie, everything in Avatar is in the right place.

For years to come, people will be talking about Avatar not only for its breathtaking visuals, but also because it is relevant and meaningful.
