Just Because...

  By Starman

Movie: New Moon

Synopsis: This is a 2009 romantic fantasy film that is based on the novel of the same name by Stephenie Meyer. There is a new director for this sequel. Chris Weitz is known for such movies as American Pie, About a Boy and The Golden Compass.

Most of the characters from the Twilight movie will reprise their roles in this sequel. Kristin Stewart (Panic Room, Adventureland), Robert Pattinson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) and Taylor Lautner (The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D) are the leads in this film.

On Bella Swan's 18th birthday, Edward realized that he could not always protect her. He ended the relationship and moved to another place. She is devastated by this loss but eventually found comfort in the form of her bestfriend, Jacob. Though she have spent time with her werewolf friend, she could not forget her feelings for her vampire ex-lover. She started to do dangerous activities just so he could appear in her consciousness.

A miscommunication resulted to Edward approaching the Volturi, the royalty of the vampires that also acts as the enforcer of their own rules. He requested for them to kill him.

With the vision of her bestfriend, Alice, they found out about his plan of suicide. Can she now race through time to reach him before a classic Romeo and Juliet scenario occurs?

Review: I haven't read the novel so I have no idea how the movie is close to that of the book. First of all, I would like to say that Pattinson's looks won't stand a chance against Lautner's 8-pack abs. It is very surprising how buff the latter's body has become since Twilight. Though I am sure that many fans are more interested in seeing the scene where Edward disrobes himself.

The focus of the film is the bond between Bella and Jacob. I get so annoyed with Stewart's character. She tends to show that she has feelings for Jacob but she obviously wants the pale vampire. I also don't know why the werewolf clan have to be shirtless. I guess ripping your shirt and underpants every time you transform is very costly.

The visual effects are good and it is the only thing that kept me from sleeping. The Volturi  also looked bad-ass. Michael Sheen’s casting as the leader of the group provided the experienced acting needed in a film full of young actors and actresses. Dakota Fanning’s character, Jane, looked so cool with those crimson red eyes. She really looked so cold-blooded. Her experience in acting never fails to impress me. I was disappointed though because their clan had limited screen time. I guess I would see them more in the other sequels.

The final battle between Edward and one of the Volturi is one of the coolest fight I have seen. I liked it because Edward just got served! They were so fast that it was like they had Nightcrawler’s power and I know most of our favorite moment in X-Men 2 is in the first 5 minutes of the film.

Score: 6/10... Just because I promised someone that I would give it a score above 5. Fans of the series will surely be satisfied by this adaptation. For other people, find ways to keep yourself awake so you could get to see Pattinson’s butt kicked.
