The Sallie Gardner Effect: $200 for 15 minutes

Issue # 4
Being John Malkovich (1999) Review
by ManicallyDepressed

The movie title refers to John Malkovich, the actor, but this is not a biographical film on him. It’s more like the worst nightmare he can ever have.

One of the, if not the most, essential characteristics of a fantasy-based film, or any literature for that matter, is the originality. Originality is an understatement for Being John Malkovich.

Again, I will stress out how original this film is. The entire film felt like a hundred new ideas cleverly tailored into a movie that is not overwhelming but instead engrossing and stimulating. The creativity is not limited to the main plot. Each development in the story will always be surprising and assures to heighten the interests of the viewers. It is often funny (though I found part of the humor to be quite dark) while not losing its smartness. The cast were exceptional, particularly Catherine Keener and John Malkovich. John Malkovich was just so f***ing funny, especially in the human puppet performance scene. (Spoiler Ahead) My favorite scene was when Malkovich entered the portal. I never guessed what would happen, and it was just ingenious.

If you read my first post, you should know that a rating of four asterisks means the film is highly recommended. Being John Malkovich is a must-watch for any movie enthusiast simply because it is one of a kind.

FUN FACT: In the first draft of the script, Lester will use the Malkovich portal to take over the world in the name of Satan. Satan is “Flemmer” from Merton-Flemmer, the name of the building.
